The Samsung Galaxy S7 is about to be usurped as the South Korean company's flagship handset. The Galaxy S8 is just around the corner, so is a Galaxy S7 worth buying right now?
There's two ways of answering that question. On one hand, no, of course not. Why would you get this close to the next generation of handsets only to buy last year's model before it emerges? Even if you don't want the latest and greatest, give it a couple of weeks for the S7 to get an inevitable price cut by dint of not being Samsung's big dog anymore.
On the other hand, once the S8 is out, there's no reason you shouldn't pick up a Samsung Galaxy S7 on the cheap. This is, lest we forget, one of the very best handsets of 2016 – narrowly missing out to the OnePlus 3T on price grounds. As a phone, it's excellent, and will still be great for months and possibly years to come. In terms of features, camera and screen it's really second to none.
You still face a choice between the S7 and the S7 Edge. But unlike previous generations, it's now a much clearer choice than it was. If you like your smartphones big, you’ll want to opt for the 5.5in Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge and pay a bit more; if you don't like having to sew up holes in your pockets every few months, the smaller, slightly cheaper 5.1in Samsung Galaxy S7 we’re reviewing here is the way to go. Either way, we think you are still getting the best smartphone on the market.
Read on for Jon's original review, and to find out why the S7 was great in March 2016, and it's still great a year later.
